It appears that the man was found dead and may have been hit by stray gun shot in the area.

According to Channel 3 News:

Police have so far released very little information about the shooting that happened on Old Stage road, Tuesday evening around 6 o'clock. They have confirmed that John Reiss was hit by a rifle round -- while at his home -- and died as a result of the wound. Reiss is the father of District Court Judge Christina Reiss. Essex police are investigating -- and have labeled the shooting as "accidental." Initial calls said a neighbor had been firing guns in his yard. Police were searching a wooded area between the neighbors house... and the victim's house ...and were seen talking to Joe McCarthy. McCarthy's co-workers say he had recently been talking about a shooting range he set up in his back yard. Police have not said if they believe that had anything to do with Reiss' death -- and again, they say they do not believe the shooting was intentional.

I think I would be camped out on Skip Taylor's desk if one of my neighbors was putting in a shooting range in their back yard.
