I will try to keep my eyes open as to when one can apply for an enhanced driver's license - Kind of a short time between now and June 1st.  I still have one of my mother's sisters living up in Canada and hope to go up and visit her - Sounds like it is not a problem getting into Canada, but you might hit problems trying to come back in without a passport or enhanced driver's license:

Vermont is getting ready to issue its first enhanced driver's licenses, which will allow holders to cross the United States-Canada border without a passport or other supporting documents.

State Motor Vehicle Commissioner Bonnie Rutledge says the first few will be issued to VIPs next month, and that they'll be available to the general public early in 2009.

The new licenses will cost $25 more than regular ones.  Anyone seeking them will have to present extensive documentation to prove their identity.

Starting on June 1, an enhanced driver's license - or a passport, or passport card - will be needed to enter the U.S. by land from Canada.

Interestingly enough, I just got a phone call from my Aunt Madeline who is 89 years old and lives in Henryville, PQ.  She called to wish me a Happy Birthday.  Remarkably sharp for a woman her age.  We talked about my having to get a passport or enhanced license, if I don't go up before June 1st.  She said she has to do something also as she got a letter the other day also.

Whatever we have to do, sure hope they make it simple.  I do have my birth certificate and an old passport I had when I was at IBM in the 1970s plus my photo license.
