• June and Frank Lee, Fairfax, 50 years
June and Frank Lee reached the 50-year milestone Jan. 23.
The 70-year-olds live in Fairfax. For about half their marriage, they lived with their five kids in Burlington's New North End.
Frank is succint when he explains the key to 50 years: "Complete opposites."
June said flexibility and realistic expectations are important qualities in sustaining and nurturing a marriage.
"Take it as it comes, and don't expect a whole lot," she asid. "You have to go with the flow; you have to get real."
Fifty-fifty, or an equal share of work, is a "big fallacy," June said. It's her sense that one or the other partner in a marriage, at various times, is shouldering a load.
"You have to give more sometimes," June said, "but it works both ways."
Fifty years of marriage, Frank said, "is probably the hardest job you'll ever have in your life."
