Fatal Car Crash In Fairfax

A Sheldon man was killed Friday when his car went off the road and into a ditch on Vermont 104 in Fairfax, Vermont State Police said.

Police said a 1999 GMC pickup driven by Dustin Churchill, 28, failed to negotiate a curve near Rocky Ridge Road at about 4:23 p.m., skidded across both lanes and overturned.

Churchill was not wearing a seat belt and was partially ejected, police said. He was pronounced dead at Nortwestern Medical Center in St. Albans.

I believe this is the third accident in this vicinity in the last week - Local residents in that area are concerned about the speed that people are travelling through the curvy area.

As much as I hate to point a finger away from personal responsibility for our own actions, I think when it's time for the that area of 104 to be reworked, it seems like the state, county, town might want to consider having some of the ledge in that area cut back, or possibly even cut enough ledge back to take a little bit of curve out of the road there.  At a minimum, it would be good to see some improvements in visibility - especially for cars coming off Rocky Ridge.

This incident and tragedy, cold have been prevented from wearing a safety belt.  This had nothing to do with the road or its conditions.  I have been to countless crashes with worse damage than the one pictured and the person walked away due the seat belt being worn.
And this part of 104 while it has had some terrible crashes (anyone remember the tractor trailer one that kept the road closed for hours?), it all comes down to the driver.

       I think the parents/residents who are speaking up now, are shaken up due to the near-miss of the school bus.  And rightfully so.  But is it a matter of an unsafe road or unsafe speeds?  Could there be the cautionary orange/yellow signs telling drivers to reduce speed by 10 mph?  Would that hurt anyone? 
       I agree though, seatbelts safe lives.  The new subaru's have a feature where they'll keep beeping and beeping until you put on the seat belt.  If you try and just buckle it and not wear it (which is just plain ignorant and askng for fate to smack you)
the recptor of the buckle is positioned so it kinda sticks you in the back/side a little.
