Elizabeth J. "Betty" Jacobs
(July 31, 1932 - May 21, 2009)
St. Albans – Elizabeth J. “Betty” Jacobs, 76, a lifelong resident of Franklin County passed away Thursday, May 21, 2009, at her home with her loving family at her side. Born in Berlin, Vermont on July 31, 1932, Betty was the daughter of the late Stewart and Clara (Coolie) Gleason. On April 21, 1951, in Enosburg Falls, Betty married Lloyd R. Jacobs, who survives her.
Betty graduated from Enosburg High School. For many years she was an Emergency Room Secretary and E.M.T. for the former Kerbs Memorial Hospital and Northwestern Medical Center retiring in 1995. Betty was also associated with the Northwestern Counseling and Support Services as and Outpatient Assistant Counselor. She was a member of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, Green Mountain Post # 1, American Legion Auxiliary, Robert E. Glidden Post # 758, Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary, Franklin County Business and Professional Women, served on the Board of Directors for the Northwestern Counseling and Support Services, the Vermont State Housing Authority and ARC of Northwestern Vermont (agency advocating for disabled citizens).
Survivors include her husband of fifty-eight years, Lloyd of St. Albans; their children, Linda Jacobs of St. Albans; Cynthia Jacobs Mirabito and her husband, James, of Fulton, New York; Thomas Jacobs and his wife, Kathleen, of Lincolnshire, Illinois and Brenda Jacobs Calano and her husband, Francis, of St. Albans; ten grandchildren, Travis, Vicki, Todd, Michael, Krista, Lindsey, Joe, Whitney, Morgan and Dan and ten great-grandchildren, Tyler, Brianna, Alex, Matthew, Mikey, Jacob, Mallori, Zachary, Makayla and Mason. Betty is also survived by her siblings, Paulie Young and her husband, Robert, of Enosburg; Greta Beaulieu and her husband, Andy, of Enosburg; Lettie Anne Barton of California, Stewart Gleason of Enosburg and Robert Gleason and his wife, Yvette, of Enosburg. Her brothers and sisters- in-law, Kermit and Amy Jacobs of Hobesound, Florida; Lyle and Charlotte Jacobs of Fairfax, Esther Ledoux of Plattsburgh, New York and Joyce Jacobs of Essex, Vermont and many nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her “Monday Night Card Girls”, Patty Walsh, Alice Sturgeon, June Barkyoumb and Sue Roberts; close friends, Al Corey, Lorraine Hutchins and Bev Connors. Betty was preceded in death by her father, Stewart in 1968; mother, Clara in 1969; her brother, James Gleason who was killed during World War II, brother, Neil Gleason and his wife, Shirley, brothers-in-law, Arnold Jacobs, Leonard Ledoux and Howard Barton; sisters-in-law, Shirley Jacobs and Norma Gleason, who was Betty’s Made-of-Honor and close friend. Her lifelong friends and card girls Elaine Grant and Hilda Vautier. Also her very special friend, Nancy Corey.
A special thank you to the nursing staff and pulmonary staff at the Northwestern Medical Center for the care and support of Betty during her recent illness. Also to the Franklin County Home Health and especially Annette Blanchard in appreciation for the wonderful, loving care that she received and for the compassionate support that was extended to her family.
Betty was a wonderful wife, mother and grandmother, she was a friend to many and dedicated to her community and will be sorely missed by all who knew her.
A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, May 26, 2009, at 11:00 A.M. in St. Paul’s United Methodist Church on Church Street with the Reverend Herman Benjamin officiating. Betty’s family will receive friends on Monday from 4 to 8 PM at the Heald Funeral Home, 87 South Main Street, St. Albans.
