Colchester’s marine unit rescued an 18-foot motorboat with six people and an infant aboard that had begun to sink in outer Malletts Bay shortly after 7 p.m.

“All the occupants were removed from the sinking vessel and transferred to a Colchester police vessel,” Colchester police said. “Some of the occupants were not wearing life jackets.”

Cannon said it also appeared that a bilge pump aboard was not working. The boat was towed to shore by a passing boater.

The 21 year old operator of the boat, from Fairfax, was cited for boating violations, including not having a boating license and failure to have enough life jackets on board.
