sent to The Fairfax News by the State of Vermont:

Heavy Rain/Thunderstorms/Flash Flooding This Weekend
WATERBURY, VT – The National Weather Service is warning of heavy rain and strong thunderstorms for most of Vermont on Friday.  Heavy rain is possible for the remainder of the weekend, particularly in areas of south central Vermont.  Heavy storms and flash flooding have already temporarily closed Route 103 in Ludlow; closed Route 110, Route 113, and the Orange County Sheriffs office in Chelsea; and caused damage in Rutland.

Lightning strikes are expected to hit areas of Vermont throughout Friday.  Those who hear or see approaching storms should seek shelter immediately.

This weekend’s rain could lead to localized flash flooding in various areas around the state.  Those who experience heavy rain should be mindful of rising waters in rivers and streams.  If floodwaters approach your home, you should evacuate immediately.  You should also monitor local media for weather alerts and possible evacuation orders and follow those instructions.

Other tips for rising waters:

-Never drive across roads that are flooded; unseen washouts and currents can sweep a car away.  Motorists should also be mindful of high water in streams along roads as roads could become undermined.

-Familiarize yourself with evacuation routes from your home; that route should take you across higher ground.

-Prepare a family disaster kit with items you may need should you be homebound; this should include flashlights, batteries, a battery powered radio, extra food and water, and other items you may need.

-Monitor local media for weather warnings and possible evacuation orders and follow the instructions of local officials.

As always, the media’s assistance in conveying this information and information during any hazardous situation is essential and appreciated.

Take Care & God Bless,
