Some residents reported receiving letters that indicate the recipient has won $49,000.

Enclosed in the letter is a check for $2,875. The letter advises the recipient to contact the sender for authorization and activation of the check provided.

Upon calling the company the caller is asked to wire tax and processing fees of $2,700.

The check provided in the letter turns out to be bogus, and the victim has wired $2,700 and never receives $49,000.
