OBITUARY: Elmer Thomas Hemingway

Mr. Elmer Thomas Hemingway, age 79 years, a longtime resident of South Elm Street St. in St. Albans City died unexpectedly Tuesday afternoon, January 5, 2010, in the Northwestern Medical Center after a long, courageous and prideful battle with Parkinson’s Disease.
Born in St. Albans, Vermont on, October 17, 1930, he was the son of the late Thomas Oney and Zora (Cheney) Hemingway. He was married in 1950 to the former Odna Yvonne Gauthier who predeceased him on January 14, 2001 following 50 years of marriage.
Elmer had been associated as a mechanic with Pike Industries for 25 years retiring in 1996. Prior to his employment with Pike Industries he had worked for City Feed in St. Albans until its closing and had also worked for a time at the former Central Vermont Railroad as well as on several area farms. He was a member of the Loyal Order of Moose, Lodge 1090 in Saint Albans.
Elmer was an avid outdoorsman who loved hunting and fishing, especially with his good friends Bob Ovitt, Dick McNall and the late Ted Wells. He was also known for his expertise in the making of homemade wines.
Elmer leaves his children, Ronald A. Hemingway of St. Albans, Susan Cherrier and companion John Wilson of Montgomery Center, Janet Hemingway and companion Steve Zweeres of Berkshire, Janice Paradis if St. Albans, Diane Miller and companion Mark Gabree of Swanton and Carol Cusson and companion Russell Dubie of St. Albans; two brothers, Robert Hemingway (who faithfully and frequently visited Elmer) and his wife Bernadette of South Hero and Earl Hemingway of East Windsor, CT; ten grandchildren, Julie, Betsy, Jo-Ann, Tevie, Kristy, Greg, Nicole, Casie, Beth and Michelle; 16 grandchildren, Samantha, Dakota, Elizabeth, Emily, Raymond Jr., Anna, Ashley, Cody, Colton, Brandon, Chelsea, Mya, Scott, Kylie, Natalie and Jacob and many nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents and his wife Odna, Elmer was predeceased by two sisters Barbara Cross and Jackie Horter.
Elmer’s family would like to extend their “sincerest thanks” to the management and staff of The Saint Albans Health and Rehabilitation Center for all of their care, concern and support over these last several months.
A Funeral Service will be held Saturday, January 9, 2010, at 11 a.m. from The Kidder Memorial Home, 89 Grand Avenue, Swanton, (802-868-3331). Relatives and friends are invited to attend. Father Thomas D. Nadeau will officiate. The Rite of Committal and Interment will follow at the Hemingway family lot in St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Cemetery.
