Anyone know where I can pick up some baled hay suitable to bank an old house at a reasonable price.  Never paid much attention when my Dad used to do it, but I believe he put plastic or black paper up and then used old baled hay.  There is an elderly woman here in town who lives alone in a very old house that is extremely difficult to heat - Just send me an e-mail at vtgrandpa@yahoo.com if you know of someone.

If anyone is able to help do this, also would be great

What does "banking" mean?

Insulate the cellar?

Put along the base of the house, around the foundation, outside. I use insulation and plastic.

In the house I grew up in, we used to put up plastic in Nov., and bank snow around the foundation as soon as we got a couple inches.  Then rebank as needed depending on snow fall and melting.
