It is with great sadness we announce the passing of our mom, Shirley B. LaCross, age 89, widow of Donald F. LaCross, who died Wednesday night, September 19, 2012, at Pillsbury Manor North in South Burlington after a one year battle with cancer. She was born November 6, 1922, in Westford, daughter of the late LeRoy and Nellie (Archambault) Barkyoumb.
Shirley and Donald, along with their two children, Jeffrey and Ann Marie, were longtime residents of Sheldon Springs with Shirley moving to St. Albans in 1987 following the death of her husband. She had lived recently at Allenwood and Pillsbury Manor North in South Burlington.
She was valedictorian for the class of 1942 at BFA-Fairfax and went on to complete Cosmetology School in Rochester, NY and worked in Brattleboro before returning to Franklin County.
Shirley was a communicant of St. Anthony’s parish in Sheldon Springs, and Holy Angels parish and was a member of the Ladies of St. Anne. Shirley worked in retailing at Ann’s Ladies and Children Wear, William Doolin & Company, and Lorraine’s, all in St. Albans.
Her Catholic faith was important to Shirley, who often said being a member of the All Saints Prayer Group for many years was a very spiritual and nurturing experience. Because of her strong faith and convictions, Shirley spent many hours counseling and sharing time with individuals who sought her advice and insight.
We would like to thank family, friends, religious, medical and caregivers who have helped Shirley and us through this difficult year.
Shirley is survived by a son, Jeffrey LaCross and his wife, Gayla of North Plainfield, NJ, and a daughter Ann Marie Donoghue and her husband, Michael of South Burlington, a grandson Matthew LaCross and his wife, Kimberly of South Plainfield, NJ., and a granddaughter Angela Dunham and her husband, Earen of Fairfax, VA., two great-granddaughters Jessica LaCross and Arianna LaCross, and a great-grandson Logan LaCross. She is also survived by a sister Alice Collins and her husband, Owen of Fairfax, one brother, John Barkyoumb of Westford, a brother-in-law Donald Williams of Greenfield, MA, several nieces and nephews. Besides her husband, she was predeceased by two sisters, Barbara LeClair and Lillian Williams, and two brothers Kenneth Barkyoumb and LeRoy Barkyoumb, Jr.
Please join us at 10:30 A.M. Monday, September 24, 2012 for a Mass of Christian Burial in Holy Angels Catholic Church in St. Albans. Interment will follow in the LaCross family lot in St. Anthony’s Cemetery in Sheldon Springs.
