NEW ULM, Minn., Jan. 3 (UPI) -- A 2-year-old boy wandered out of his Minnesota home at night in sub-zero temperatures and died before being discovered by his mother in the morning.
Dara Lenz, a 26-year-old single mother, found her son, Lucas Boldt, lying in a snowbank about 10-20 feet outside their New Ulm, Minn., home Wednesday morning, the Star Tribune reported Thursday.
"I woke up into a nightmare," she told the Minneapolis newspaper. "This is nothing you want to wake up to. ... I found my baby in a snowbank. ... He was my pride and joy."
She said he had gone to sleep with the boy in her bedroom and she didn't realize he had left the room.
Police were called to the home about 7:45 a.m. and tried to resuscitate him but he was pronounced dead at an area hospital. Temperatures were about 9 below zero at 7 a.m., the National Weather Service said.
Police, who were unsure how long the child was outside, said there was no suspicion of foul play, the Star Tribune reported.
