Well, I make my own decision every fall as to whether my winter tires will go another year or not.  Interesting way to check your tires to see if you do need new ones.  Finally use for a penny.

"The best way to check your winter tire tread, though it's an old trick, it still works. Take a penny, stick it in the tread, and if Lincoln's head is partially covered up, you're good to go for the season."
