Esther Jewett
(November 7, 1921 - March 6, 2010) FRANKLIN – Esther Katherine Jewett, age 88, widow of Arnold L. Jewett, passed away Saturday morning, March 6, 2010 at the St. Albans Health Care & Rehab Facility in St. Albans.
She was born November 7, 1921 in Fairfax the daughter of the late, Oliver & Josephine (Thibault) Cross.
Esther led a very fulfilling life. She met Arnold and they were married on August 27, 1942. They started their family in 1945 when their daughter was born. In 1949 their first son was born, then in 1952, they were blessed with another son, their life was complete. Most of their lives, Esther & Arnold operated a dairy farm, which as any farmer knows, your work doesn’t end when the sun goes down and she was always there to give Arnold a hand. First and foremost Esther’s family was her whole world, and her pride and joy. Her life revolved around her husband and three children. Whenever there was a break between the farming chores, Esther would pack a picnic lunch and her and Arnold would play hooky and go fishing. Fishing was an interest they both shared. Esther also enjoyed gardening and preserving the vegetables for winter. She also enjoyed working in her beautiful flower gardens when time allowed. After retiring, she still enjoyed her flower gardens and feeding and watching the birds.
Esther never learned to drive a car, so at grocery shopping time and other times away from the farm it was done together with her husband. Esther’s entire life changed drastically on November 29, 1996 when her husband passed away. If it hadn’t been for her devotion to her children, she might have given up, but instead Esther continued caring, and always being there for her children, grandchildren, friends and neighbors.
She is survived by her daughter, Darlene Fowler of Sheldon; 2 sons and their wives, Richard & Beverly Jewett of Highgate Ctr., & James & Nancy Jewett of Franklin; 6 grandchildren, and 1 great grandson; 1 sister, Ethel Messier of East Fairfield; 2 sisters-in-law, Gladys Cross of Swanton and Rose Cross of Milton; several nieces and nephews including a special nephew, Andrew Dulude of Bakersfield. Besides her parents and husband, Esther was predeceased by a grandson, Mark Greenwood on June 6, 2007; a great grandson, Zachary Smith on September 27, 1997; a son-in-law, Thomas Fowler on March 8, 2003; her siblings, Ina McKinney, Walter Cross, Oliver Cross Jr., Evelyn LaBelle, Alma King, Eugene Cross, and Ectuce Cross.
