BURTON RICHARD "BURT" SORRELL

ST. ALBANS - Burton Richard "Burt" Sorrell, age 76 years, died Wenesday morning, May 12, 2010, in the Northwestern Medical Center with family at his side. Burt was a lifelong Franklin County resident, most recently residing on James Circle in St. Albans Town. Born in St. Albans on May 9, 1934, he was the son of the late Fred and Beatrice (Garrett) Sorrell. He received his education in Fletcher schools as well as BFA-Fairfax and in 1967 graduated from Champlain College with a degree in Business Administration. On Dec. 7, 1952 he was married to the Former Blanche Sorrell who survives him. He faithfully served his country through the Vermont Army National Guard, stationed with the 152nd Armor Division in St. Albans. Burt's work experience included associations with Frank Deslaurier, The George Soul Co. and Leader Evaporator, all located in St. Albans. He later received his insurance license and worked in Sales for Monarch, Mutual of Omaha and the Knights of Columbus Insurance Companies. From 1972 until 1987, he owned and operated a dairy farm in Franklin and later retired in 1996 after working 13 years for IBM of Essex Junction. Following retirement, he volunteered for several years as a driver for the Vermont Public Transportation Association. He was also a longtime member of the Loyal Order of Moose, Lodge 1090 of St. Albans. Burt and his wife Blanche were foster parents to over 27 children and remained very close to several, especially Ernestine, Pat and Evelyn. In addition to his wife Blanche of 58 years, Burt leaves his daughter, Kathleen E. Read and her husband Gary of East Fairfield; three grand- children, Stacy Bishop, Luke Cyr and Melaney Smith; four great-grandchildren, Joey Bishop Jr., Ryan Cyr, Carson Smith and Brody Cyr; a brother, Frank Sorrell of Windsor Lockes, Conn.; two sisters-in-law, Linda Burnor of St. George and Gertrude Bates and husband Louis Sr. of Floral City, Fla.; brother-in-law, William Bushey of Tenn.; as well as several nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, Burt was predeceased by four children, Burton Richard Sorrell Jr. in 1955, Lisa Anne Sorrell in 1956, Joseph Dean Sorrell in 1957 and Vincent John Sorrell in 1981; a brother-in-law, Albert Burnor; and a sister, Grace Sorrell Bushey. A Funeral Service will be held Saturday, May 22, 2010, at 11 a.m. from The Kidder Memorial Home, 89 Grand Ave. Swanton, (802-8683331). Father Bernard J. Bechard, SSE will officiate. The Rite of Committal and Interment with Military Honors will follow at the Sorrell family lot in St. Luke's Roman Catholic Cemetery, Fairfax.
