Several new laws take effect in Vermont today and most deal with motorists.
Drivers can now be fined for failing to use due care when driving by pedestrians and bicyclists.
Fines will also double from $100 to $200 for drivers who illegally park in handicap spots.
Among the other changes that take effect today are that teachers will begin paying 5 percent of their salaries toward retirement, up from 3.5 percent, and businesses now face tougher penalties for failing to carry workers' compensation insurance.
