Tonight at 11:09 p.m. Fall begins.  It is the most wonderful time of the year.  When I was on the farm on Fairfield Ridge, that is when we got our biggest milk checks - cows were in the meadows instead of the pastures - lots of blackberries for blackberry pies and mother used to even make blackberry shortcake with lots of whip cream on top.

Our turkeys we raised would be what you would call "free-range" turkeys today, as we did not keep them penned up.  They just roamed around the farm and used to roost on top of the old garage at night.

Dad had already picked out the beef cow that was to be butchered in November and was feeding her some special fattening grain.  Don't remember what he fed her, but just had to have a lot of fat on her.

Mother had her pickles made and long about this time we had a lot of big old ripe cucumbers that she used to make sweet pickles with.  They sure smelled good and I think it was the cloves or something that she put in them.  Lots of people call them "tongue pickles" today.

I have lots of fond memories growing up, but when I stop and think about it, I really have it pretty darn good today without going through all the hard work my parents did.

Any how, enjoy your last day of summer as tomorrow starts our first day of fall.
