The job of the 1,500 guardsmen and women in Afghanistan is over and they are home.

But now they work to return to their normal jobs.

Ric Volp is back on patrol as a senior officer in the Burlington Police Department.

"It's one of the things that I like most about the job is it changes from day to day and is never the same," says Volp.

But Volp has another title.

The first lieutenant in the Vermont National Guard's Bravo Battery recently returned from Afghanistan where he trained their national police.

"In my quarter of Kabul there were about 1,500 that I oversaw," says Volp.

Volp's job was to transform a motley crew that gave a new meaning to basic training.

"One day you could work with them on how to tie their shoes better, put their handcuffs on their uniform. The next day maybe marksmanship for a rifle," says Volp.

Volp spent a year in Afghanistan and returned to Vermont in December.
