Well, I don't know about your family, but in my family every birthday is celebrated with the birthday honoree's favorite food.  Today, April 4, 2011 would have been my Dad's 116th birthday.  For his birthday, mother always used to make a nice warm cream cake.  Now I am not sure if you will find this in any recipe book, but it was a cake made in a 9x13 cake pan, split in half with heavy whipped cream in the middle and another layer on top.  It was truly delicious.  I can't remember whether it was a white cake or a yellow cake, but I do remember that the warm cream cake was out of this world.

I think that this is kind of a tradition handed down, as a few weeks ago I heard my oldest daughter saying that she was fixing something for her husband and oldest son's birthday and it was going to be one of their favorites.  This month my two younger daughters celebrate their birthdays and you can be sure I will be asking them what they will want for their birthday dinner, just to make sure they have a Happy Birthday.

The cream cake is SOOOO good!  I love our Birthday tradition.  For the past decade I tended to always incorporate shrimp cocktail as an appetizer and Dad would pick them up fresh from Costco.  Dad would have a few and Mom and I would take care of the rest of them!  This year, I don't think I can do that without her as she used to enjoy it as much as I did. Next year Mom, I will try, I promise.

About this time of year Mom would say "Start thinking about what you want for your birthday so your Dad get pick up stuff for it when he goes grocery shopping".  I can hear her plain as day.

So with that being said; this year Daddy, "Beef and Dumplings (a family favorite and these are soft dumplings folks; delicious!) and we can have Eastman's Bakery do the work on a pie, hmmm will have to think which one to get!"  ;-)
