Howard Everett Stockwell
(September 13, 1913 - January 22, 2011)


Howard Everett Stockwell, 97, of 5 Woodward Road, Buckland, MA, died January 22, 2011 in Venice, Florida. He was born in Springfield, MA September 13, 1913, the son of Everett E. and Gertrude V. (Cole) Stockwell. Howard graduated from Vernon, VT North Elementary School, Brattleboro, VT High School and Worcester Polytechnic Institute where he received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering. While at WPI, he held offices in Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity and was active in inter-fraternity sports.

Howard was employed by the New England Power Company for nearly 44 years, holding positions in East Barnet, VT, Littleton, NH, Shelburne Falls, MA, Boston, MA and Lebanon, NH. He retired as Director of Hydro Production for the Connecticut and Deerfield River Valleys and was responsible for signing on the Bear Swamp Hydroelectric Pumped Storage Facility in Rowe, MA. He was a Massachusetts Registered Professional Engineer. While living in Lebanon, NH, Howard was a member of the Chamber of Commerce, Lions Club and Zoning Board (10 years). He was also an active member of the Lebanon 1st Congregational Church and Chairman of the Grafton County Senior Citizens Maintenance Committee. Mr. Stockwell was a member of the Buckland Historical Society and served on the committee responsible for the restoration of the Buckland Public Hall. He was also a member of the Shelburne Historical Society as well as one of the original members of Trinity Church in Shelburne Falls. In 1945, he joined the Mountain Lodge of Masons in Shelburne Falls, serving as Master in 1952. He was a member of the Scottish Rite Bodies in New Hampshire as well as the New Hamphire Bektash Temple. In his retirement years, Howard enjoyed building clocks, collecting and repairing antique clocks, model railroading, riding on tourist trains, traveling and gardening. Since 1980, he has spent the winter months in Florida. Howard was married to Mary L. Knox of Woodsville, NH who predeceased him in 1989. He is survived by his loving companion, Mildred C. March; his daughter, Anne (Robert) Bezio of Southampton, MA; his son, Kenneth E. (Margarite) Stockwell of Fairfax, VT; Three grandchildren - Brian (Michelle) Bezio of Stafford, VA, Karen (Walter) Brouillette of Highgate, VT, Kevin (Jennifer) Stockwell of Westford, VT; Four great-grandchildren – Courtney and Aaron Bezio, Alexandra Brouillette, Mary Stockwell; and several nieces and nephews. A new great-grandchild is expected in May. He also leaves his extended family – Timothy (Carol) March of Boulder, CO; Deborah (Douglas) Decoigne of Buckland; Kathleen March of Silver Spring, MD; Kelly, Alexander and Amanda March; Danielle and Douglas Decoigne. He was predeceased by a sister, Marion Smith Johnson and a brother, Richard D. Stockwell. A memorial service for Howard E. Stockwell of Shelburne Falls, Massachusettts, who passed away January 22, 2011 in Venice, Florida, will be held on Saturday, April 16, 2011 at 11:00am at the Trinity Church, 17 Severance Street, Shelburne Falls, Mass.  A reception will immediately follow the service.  Local arrangements are entrusted to the Brady and Levesque Funeral Home.
