LILLIAN MARION FLANAGAN

 Mrs. Lillian Marion Flanagan, age 91 years, a Saint Albans City resident for over 75 years and more recently of Swanton Village died early Tuesday morning, May 24, 2011, in Fletcher Allen Health Care with family at her side.

Born in St. Albans on, November 21, 1919, Lillian was the daughter of the late Theophilium and Mamie (Tromblay) Parah she attended Fairfax schools and later graduated from the Johnson Teachers College. On October 24, 1942, she married Terrance M. Flanagan who predeceased her on September 28, 1998, following 56 years of marriage.

 As an elementary school teacher Lillian taught the youth throughout Franklin County for over 40 years and continued to substitute in area schools for many years following her retirement.  Because her many contributions to the Saint Albans Community  have been numerous and have  significantly been an asset to all, The Honorable Martin D.J. Manahan, Mayor of the City of Saint Albans proclaimed Saturday, November 21, 2009, as Lillian Flanagan Day.

Lillian was a devoted Roman Catholic and longtime member of the Church of the Immaculate Conception, (Saint Mary’s Parish), in Saint Albans. After moving to Swanton she became a parishioner of Nativity / Saint Louis Parish. She was also a member of the Catholic Daughters of the Americas # 468 Court Saint Mary of Saint Albans. She loved traveling especially in Europe to visit her daughter and also enjoyed gardening, cooking of all kinds and especially spending time with her family.

Lillian leaves four children, Terrance James Flanagan and his wife Sharon of Highgate Springs, Michaelene Flanagan of Helsinki, Finland, Paula Flanagan of Bakersfield and Sharon Flanagan of Mississauga, Ontario; 13 grandchildren, Matthew, Zachary, Samuel, Peter and Mikaela Flanagan, Nicholas Cota, Blane Fonda, Wahkuna, Bjorn, Chantal, Zeb, Joshua Lisik and Brian Cota and his wife Robi; 3 great grandchildren, Soren Maillet, Audrey Lisik and Charlie Cota as well as many nieces, nephews, friends and former students.

In addition to her parents and husband Lillian was predeceased by an infant son John Flanagan in 1949; a daughter, Kathleen Flanagan Fonda on May 15, 1990 and several brothers and sisters.

The Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday, May 28, 2011, at 10 a.m. from The Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, 65 Canada St. Swanton. Father Thomas D. Nadeau will be the celebrant and homilist. A reception for family and friends will immediately follow at the Nativity Parish Center. The Rite of Committal and Interment will take place Saturday at 1 p.m. at the family lot In Saint Luke’s Roman Catholic Cemetery, Fairfax. Friends may call at  Kidder Memorial Home, 89 Grand Ave., Swanton on Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Gifts in Lillian’s memory may be made to the Vermont Association for the Blind and Visually Impaired. 60 Kimball Ave., S. Lillian's obituary has been updated.  She was a sister to Louis, Charles & Phil Parah.
