What was very common knowledge to me as a kid, probably has never been heard of by our youngsters of today.  When I was growing up in my French Catholic Family, there was never any guessing when it came to what we would be having for supper (Today everybody calls it dinner).  Ash Wednesday has always been a day of Fast (18 - 59) & Abstinence (14 yrs of age or older).  Now I believe that the old saying or superstition of eating pancakes with maple syrup on Ash Wednesday might just have been to make going without meat or fasting more tolerable.  Even though I have never heard of anyone who had the so called seven year itch, having pancakes with pure Vermont Maple Syrup always seemed like a good idea on Ash Wednesday, especially if you could have some of the new crop Maple Syrup.

So, wives, mothers, if you are wondering what you should have for supper tonight, pancakes with maple syrup sounds good to me.  Mother always used to fry a few eggs to go with them too.

On the bright side, Easter is six weeks away, which means spring.

I grew up having pancakes on Ash Wednesday as well.  I guess we will be having pancakes when we get home from the gym tonight!  Thanks for the reminder Henry.
