MADELYN S. (HUTCHINS) MACHIA


JEFFERSONVILLE - Madelyn Shirley (Hutchins) Machia, age 98, a lifelong resident of Jeffersonville, passed away Wednesday, March 28, 2012, in Copley Hospital in Morrisville. She was born Feb. 11, 1914, in Bakersfield, daughter of the late Frank Owen and Susan Mary (Safford) Hutchins. Madelyn was a graduate of Cambridge High School, Class of 1932. She married Gerald A. Machia in St. Thomas Church, Underhill Center, on June 6, 1933. Gerald predeceased Madelyn on Oct. 21, 2005. Madelyn worked for many years as a partner with her husband in Machia Construction, Inc. She was a treasured volunteer at the Bryan Memorial Art Gallery in Jeffersonville. Madelyn lovingly hand sewed many stuffed animals and clothes for all of her family members over the years. She enjoyed Vermont summer flowers and her splendid gardens, often cooking and canning her homegrown vegetables. Madelyn was mostly known for her devotion to her loving family and will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her, especially her friends at Copley Manor and Manns Meadow in Jeffersonville. The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the great staff at Copley Manor for Mom's wonderful care. Mom was a member of St. Mary's for 70 years and a devoted Christian. She is survived by one son, Richard Machia and wife, Margaret "Peg," of Jeffersonville; three daughters, Geraldene Rooney and husband, Norman, of Jeffersonville, Jane Shaw and husband, Terry, of Jeffersonville, and Lynda Cootware of Essex; two sisters, Betty Lou Holland and husband, Fred, of California, and Joanne Fields and husband, James, of Maryland; 12 grand- children, Patti Barup, Sue Wyckoff, Paula Machia, Scott Machia, Michael Rooney, Robert Rooney, Matt Rooney, Kathy Snell, Donna Rooney, Charlie Shaw, Michael Shaw, and Andrew Shaw; 13 greatgrandchildren; three greatgreat-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and cousins. She was also predeceased by five brothers, Owen, Gerald, Roy, E. Maurice and Arnold; sister, Thelma (Hutchins) Machia; and granddaughter, Deborah (Machia) Melvin. Visiting hours will be held on Friday, March 30, 2012, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the A.W. Rich Funeral Home Fairfax Chapel. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, March 31, 2012, at 11 a.m. from St. Mary the Assumption Church in Cambridge, con-celebrated by the Reverend Charles R. Danielson and the Reverend Francis Prive. Inurnment will follow in the family lot in Mountain View Cemetery, Cambridge. Memorial contributions in Madelyn's memory may be made to Lamoille Area Cancer Network, P.O. Box 38, Lake Elmore, VT 05657, or Lamoille Home Health and Hospice, 54 Farr Ave., Morrisville, VT 05661. Arrangements are by A.W. Rich Funeral Home, 1176 Main St., Fairfax, VT 05454.
