Thank you for saying that, counsellor, I have mixed feelings myself about the whole idea.  My experiences with donkeys has been in Central America where they are hard-working, long suffering creatures who endure much hardship in their difficult lives helping provide for their owners, whose lives are equally difficult.....

In bringing Donkeyball to Fairfax, the humanity of this event was the first topic for discussion and consideration.

As an animal advocate, we had a variety of questions regarding the treatment of these beautiful animals, including: how their life on their VT farm is (i.e. are they well treated, what type of operation provides these services, etc), was the trip from Danby to Fairfax going to be difficult (how were they transported, do they have side-effects, etc), how many games a year do they play (i.e. are they overworked), are their weight limits for riding the donkey (yes, 210lbs) and what kind of precautions are taken to ensure that the players treat the donkeys kindly (only the owner and 1 of his staff will referee because they want to be present with the donkeys at all times).   After receiving more than satisfactory responses from the husband and wife who own -- and love -- their animals, we agreed to do donkeyball.

These donkeys are well fed, well groomed, well behaved and loved deeply.  It was a wonderful -- and humane -- experience for everyone involved.  For those of you who supported this great (and fun) event, thank you.  For those of you who are concerned about the treatment of the donkeys, I completely understand your concern as I had it as well.  However, please know that this was vetted pretty extensively and we were confident when we signed on that these animals were treated with respect and humanity.

Chris, the only way you would have fallen off your donkey was getting off.  Your donkey never took one step.  What a wonderful family evening that was.  I thought a little pricey but I understand you wanted to make some money.  Any idea how much money was made?

Forgive my ignorance, but I don't understand how abusive a slow-paced (I presume, since these are not fast animals) basketball game could be abusive to a creature that is
a pack animal by nature? It seems its historical duties would be much more demanding--especially in Central America. I would guess North American Donkey's live a rather pampered life in the modern age. I would think the unsettled old west was some rather difficult terrain to maneuver, in certain places.
