State police: Watch out for moose on the move
MILTON — Vermont State Police are warning drivers to be on the watch for moose, deer and other animals on the highway, especially at dawn and dusk when wildlife is often on the move.
The warning came after four vehicles hit the same moose in the southbound lane of Interstate 89 about 4 a.m. Monday in Milton, Senior Trooper Michelle Le-Blanc said. She said no injuries were reported and all drivers refused to be checked by a rescue squad.
LeBlanc said Lisa Whittemore, 56, of St. Albans called 911 to report that she struck a moose with her 2002 Honda Accord shortly before the exit 17 interchange in Colchester. She was able to stop her car and said the moose was still alive in the left lane.
Within minutes state police learned that three more vehicles struck the moose. The drivers were identified as Celina Martineau, 49, of St Jean-Sur-Richelieu, Quebec; Steven Mullen, 44, of Fairfax and Fielding Moore, 64, of Edgartown, Mass.
All but Mullen’s car had to be towed from the scene, LeBlanc said. None of the cars collided and each was able to stop without incident.
The Vermont Fish and Wildlife Department removed the dead moose, while the Milton Fire Department helped clear away the large amount of debris left by the four vehicles, LeBlanc said.
State police also issued an alert to early morning commuters due to the clean up effort. The road was slippery due to the wash down of the road, especially in the left lane, according to Richard Post, an emergency communications dispatcher for the state.
