Hi All,

Well, this Sunday, March 25th at 2 p.m., the Fairfax Historical Society will be holding its quarterly meeting in the Library.  Got a call from Charlotte McNall who told me she had a New Hampton Institute Book and indeed she did.  Charlotte's maiden name was Parris and her father attended The New Hampton Institute.  I am handling the book very carefully, because the year it was published was 1867.  That's right, the booklet is 140 years old.  Stopped by the Fairfax Town Office and Donna helped me make a copy of the book as I don't believe I will want to pass it around at the meeting, although I will have it there to look at.

Below, I have typed a couple of pages from it:

EXPENSES

Tuition must be prepaid.

No charge for tuition will be made for less than a half quarter, it being in all cases reckoned either from the beginning or the middle of the quarter. In case of protracted sickness, tuition may be refunded at the discretion of the Faculty.

Incidentals, the same for a half as for a whole quarter, ……………….   .25

Board at the Boarding House of the Female Department, including room-rent, lodging, use of furniture, and fuel, is at present $2.75 per week. Each young Lady is expected to furnish towels and tea or dessert spoon for herself. Board in families, including the above, except fuel, can be had for $3.00 to $3.50.

Board in the club from $1.50 to $2.00 per week. Room rent, 30 to 40 cents. Roomers should bring sheets and pillow cases.

NEW     HAMPTON      INSTITUTION

By-Laws

1. The executive authority is vested in the Faculty, consisting of the Board of Instruction.
2. No student may be absent from any exercise without rendering an excuse, or leave town without permission previously obtained.
3. Gentlemen and ladies may not board in the same family, nor occupy rooms in the same house.
4. Students may board only at places approved by the Faculty, and no change may be made in boarding places without permission.
5. Students may not be absent from their rooms after ten o'clock at night.
6. No meeting of the students may continue after half past nine o'clock at night.
7. Any member of the Faculty shall be readily admitted into the rooms of the students.
8. During study hours perfect order is required of all students, both at the Institution and in their rooms, and no meetings of Students may be held during study hours except by leave of the Faculty.
9. No student may be absent from Chapel Prayers, or from Church on the Sabbath, without rendering an excuse.
10. Gentlemen may not visit ladies at their rooms, nor walk nor ride with them without permission.
11. Habits of neatness and propriety are at all times expected of the students, and any impropriety will subject the offender to such wholesome discipline as the good of the Institution may require.
12. All smoking in or around the Institution buildings is forbidden.
13. The Faculty may make whatever other regulations they may deem the best interests of the Institution to require.
