Mrs. Emily Catherine (Peno) Cross, age  86, died peacefully with her children singing at her bedside on Sunday, January 13, 2013.  She was born in St. Albans February 22, 1926 daughter of the late Peter and Emily (Lamoine) Peno.  She attended Johnson State College and received her Master’s in Education from the University of Vermont.  Emily taught in Vermont schools from 1947 until her retirement from St. Albans Town Elementary School in 1988.  As a communicant of Holy Angels, she served on the Pastoral Council, taught in Holy Angels School, taught religion education and was a member of the Ladies of St. Anne.  A member of the NEA and VEA, St. Albans Town Teachers Association and parents groups, and coached the Cheery Go-Go’s cheerleaders.  She was also a member of the American Campgrounds Coast to Coast and a Maple Square Dancer.  She was a member of the Fairfax Alumni, Johnson State College Alumni, and UVM Alumni. 

She married Paul M. Cross on June 20, 1949 in Fairfax, who predeceased her on May 9, 2006.  She is survived by their 7 children and their spouses Peter and Patricia Cross of St. Albans; Joseph and Debra Cross of Chugiak, Alaska;  Suzan and Gary Comette of Fletcher; Catherine and Roy St. Pierre of Fairfield; Jeanette and Mark Cadieux of Georgia;  John and Helene Cross of Alburg, and Monica and Jim Robert of Wolcott;  her brother Peter Peno and his wife Eleanor of Concord, NH.  She was predeceased by her sister Elaner and her husband Horace Proper of Claremont, NH.  She leaves behind 14 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren, several cousins, nieces and nephews, teacher friends and faculty and many of Vermont’s children and parents that she taught and loved in the schools of many Vermont towns. Many thanks to the kind and caring staff of Franklin County Rehab for their loving caregiving of Emily in her final years.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday, January 18th at 10:00AM in Holy Angels Church in St. Albans.   Friends may call at the Brady and Levesque Funeral Home, 86 South Main St. on Thursday, January 17th from 6pm – 9pm.  Interment will be in the Cross family lot in St. Luke’s Cemetery in Fairfax. The family of the late Emily C. Cross would like to thank everyone for the enormous
outpourings of kindness, caring, and thoughtfulness during our time of sorrow and
the fact that these expressions are still being shown. There are no words that can
express our appreciation. A special thanks to Frank and Judy Zsoldos and their staff
for the years of caring for our loved one, as well as the entire staff of Franklin County
 Rehab for caring for our mother during the final stages of her illness.

Sue, don't know if you have ever seen the photo that Jimmy Minor let me borrow of your grandfather Peter Peno at St. Luke's Cemetery when the new cross was installed there and being blessed by Father Hickey with Altar Boy Dennis Lavallee:
