April 2013 Events at the Fairfax Community Library

Spring is finally here! Hurray! In celebration of warmer weather, at the library this month, we have put an extra spring into our program offerings. For adults, beginner computer classes finish up this month, as well as our spring gardening workshops. Our next Vermont Humanities Council reading group meeting is on April 11th (we still have a few copies of the book available!). For youth, we have two after school programs starting this month: Build It! and LCATV is offering a Video Story Time Camp during spring break. School spring break somehow means pirates here at the library, so we're having a Pirate Party and a special visit from Rockin' Ron the Friendly Pirate (sponsored by Success by Six).
*Attention youth musicians! We are looking for young musicians to perform in our summer concert series on July 16th at 6:30 pm in our Young Musician Summer Showcase. Individual or group acts, all kinds of music, are welcomed. Please contact Karyn at knorwood@fwsu.org or 849-2420 for more information.*

News from the Town Librarian:

Did you know that the library is overseen by 5 elected Trustees? These are the folks who are responsible for policy and hiring staff for the library, as well as setting the annual budget, which is supported by local tax dollars. Your elected trustees currently are: Pat McNall, Toni Jiwatram, Judy Cleary, Elizabeth Griffin, and Peg Stewart.

You can access the library’s subscription to Consumer Reports in two ways. We have the print edition and you may check magazines out for one week. WE have about 2 years of back issues and the annual buying guide book. You can also access Consumer Reports’ reviews and test results at www.consumerreports.org. The user name is FairfaxLibraryVT and the password is Community75.

Learn computer basics from experienced Senior Ed instructor Tom Barber. Topics begin with how to navigate a desktop to browsing the internet and checking email. This is the third session. Preregistration is required; please sign up by stopping by, calling, or emailing the library. Free for all ages.

Wednesday, April 3, 3-4:15 pm: READ to a Dog

Kids can read a book of their choice to a fuzzy, friendly dog. To sign-up for a time slot, call (849-2420) or stop by the library.

Thursday, April 4, 2:45-4:30 pm: Build It! After-School Program
In this popular after-school program taught by 4-H instructor Martha Manning, students are given a different team or individual building challenge that they must solve following certain rules and the materials provided. One week we might be building a castle, the next, something that moves! For children in grades 1 through 3 (approximate ages: 6-9). This program is full. If you’d like to register for the wait list, please call 849-2420.

Thursday, April 4, 6:30-7:30 pm: PJ Story Time with Success by Six
Toddlers bundle up in their favorite pajamas for a PJ story time and craft activity at the library. Ages 0-6. Free.

Thursday, April 11, 6:30-8 pm: VHC Memorable Memoirs Reading Group
Please join us for the third meeting of our Memorable Memoirs reading group. For this session, we’ll be discussing Richard Baker’s memorable memoir, Growing Up. Helene Lang, scholar of literature and humanities, will facilitate the discussion. All are welcome. Copies of this read are still available- pick yours up at the library today!

Tuesday, April 16, 3-4 pm: After School Craft: Plastic Bag Kites
In the spirit of Earth Day (April 22) and spring, for our after school craft this month we’re making kites out of old plastic bags! Kids can bring a couple of plastic bags from home, or we’ll have some here at the library to use. If the weather is nice, we may even take them outside for a test drive on the middle school lawn! Free, for ages 6+. Registration is limited to 12 children.

Tuesday, April 16, 6-8 pm: Intentional Language
Using intentional language with your little one is important. Find out how to use deliberate and effective words with young children in this presentation by Scott Noyes. Sponsored by Success by Six. Located at the library. Free; all are welcome.

Thursday, April 18, 6-8 pm: Spring Gardening Series: Easy Care Shrubs and Perennials
In our final gardening workshop, Kelley Wakefield, Master Gardener, will share her knowledge of easy care scrubs and perennials. She will also discuss pruning, design, and as a special treat: rain gardens! Preregistration encouraged.

Monday, April 22 –Friday, April 26, daily 1-3 pm: LCATV Video Story Time Camp
Friday, April 26, 3:15 pm: There will be a video story time presented by campers open to all ages.
In this April break youth camp lead by Lake Champlain Access Television, kids will have the opportunity to learn about the professional equipment used to produce television programming, while planning a story hour for younger children. All participants will be taught the basics of operating a camera, producing a show and editing a short piece for television. Free, for ages 10-14. Registration is required. Please sign up at the library—a registration and permission form must be filled out.

Tuesday, April 23, 10-11:30 am: Pirate Party & Story Time
Arrr! It’s Pirate Week at the library! Join fellow pirates and buccaneers in a swashbuckling party at the library. We’ll sing some sea shanties, do a pirate craft or two, and read some tales of sea adventure and treasure. Dress in your pirate finest! Free, for all ages. Please preregister with the library. Only 24 spots are available, so register early!
