GEORGE T. MATTHEWS WILLISTON — George T. Matthews, born March 19, 1928, in Richmond, Quebec, Canada, the son of the late George Lee and Delia (Lavoie) Matthews, died early Thursday, June 27, 2013, in Fletcher Allen Health Care.
George served in the United States Army during World War II as a medic ambulance driver.
He was honorably discharged in 1956, then returned to Vermont and began his career. George was a valued employee at Flanders Building Supply for 32 years, after which he retired to have more time to enjoy his “hobby.“ George was well respected in Vermont and northern New York for his talent at finishing sheetrock, which he continued to enjoy until as recently as last year.
He is survived by his companion of 34 years, Cathy Bombardier, and her children; his two daughters, Sandra Gillilan and husband, Gary, of Fletcher, and Alice Hartson and husband, Ray, of Fairfax; five grandchildren, Erik and Thomas Crucitti, Ray Hartson Jr., Gary Gillilan Jr., Kelly Gillilan; and four greatgrandchildren, Erica, Colynn, Madisyn and Matthew. He is also survived by his former wife, Leona Bushey Williams of Fairfax; and former son-in-law, Robert Crucitti. George was predeceased by one sister, Therese Matthews Lacroix; and two brothers, Guy and Paul Matthews.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, July 8, 2013, at 10 a.m. at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Williston.
Interment will follow in East End Cemetery in Williston. In accordance with George’s wishes there will be no visiting hours, however, a reception will be held at the church immediately following interment.
