Another Young Person Dies In An Auto Accident - Bad Year

INCIDENT:         Fatal Motor Vehicle Collision
 
SUMMARY OF INCIDENT:
 
On 7/31/13 at approximately 23:59 hours, State Police in Middlesex responded to a report of a motor vehicle collision on Interstate 89 in the Town of Waterbury, VT.
 
Investigation indicates that a 22 year old male from Barre Vermont was traveling south on Interstate 89 when for an unknown reason, he drifted off the left side of the roadway. The vehicle traveled through the median, across both northbound lanes of travel and collided with a section of guardrail along the east side of the roadway. The vehicle then traveled back across the median, across both south bound lanes of travel and came to rest along a section of guardrails along the west side of the roadway.
 
The operator was transported to the Central Vermont Hospital where he was pronounced deceased. The male was transported to the Chief Medical Examiner’s Office in Burlington where an autopsy will be performed.
 
        State Police continue to investigate the collision. Speed does not appear to be a factor. State Police are withholding the name of the male operator involved until notification of family can be made. Operation Sober Summer Press Release

In an effort to reduce crashes and remove impaired drivers from Vermont highways the Vermont State Police will be participating in “Operation Sober Summer.”  This data driven campaign will consist of motor vehicle  enforcement in an attempt to combat aggressive and impaired driving to reduce crashes.

To date there have been 34 deaths in 31 crashes on Vermont roadways.   In 2012 there were 40 deaths in 35 crashes.  2011 was the lowest total of crash fatalities since 1944.  There were 21 fatalities through June of 2011.

Operation Sober Summer will include saturation patrols and Checkpoints in high crash areas throughout the state.
