Hubert Lawrence Smith
(April 10, 1927 - August 3, 2013)


St. Albans: Hubert L. Smith, 86, died Saturday, Aug. 3, 2013, at the St. Albans Health and Rehab Center with his loving wife of 60 years, Joyce at his side.
He was born in Fletcher, April 10, 1927, son of the late Lawrence F. and R. Frances (Goodhue) Smith. Hubert graduated from BFA-St. Albans in 1945, where he was involved with athletics, playing football, baseball and basketball. Following graduation, he served in the U.S. Army and was a Veteran of World War II. On January 1, 1953, he married the former Joyce Glidden in the Sheldon Methodist Church. He was employed as a locomotive engineer with the Central Vermont Railway until his retirement in 1989 after 43 years of service.

Hubert was a member of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, CVR Veterans, Robert E. Glidden Post 758 VFW, St. Albans Historical Society and United Brethren # 21 F&A M Masonic Lodge in White River Jct. and was
a former member of Green Mountain Post #1, American Legion. He was an avid Red Sox Fan, enjoyed traveling and in later years, watching birds.

Hubert leaves his loving wife, Joyce and together they shared five children; Cynthia Cook, predeceased in 2003, Sharon Kalahan and husband, Kevin, of Fairfax, Randall Smith and wife, Karen, of Beverly Hills, FL, Julie Norris and husband, Alan, of Fairfax, VT and Betsy Moss of St. Albans; 12 grandchildren and their families, Eric Smith and Lisa and their children, Ariel and Avery, Travis Smith and Tina and their son, Cameron, Casey Cook Bessette and Michael and their children, Caylin and Carson, Andrew Norris and Karen, Cody Norris and Whitney and their children, Tatum and Ari, Rebecca Smith Morin and Scott and their children, Quinton, Gavin and Ireland, Kyle Norris, Adam Cook and Nicole and their children, Bradley, Hailey and Jonathan, Ethan Moss, Morgan Moss, Colton Reed and Landon Reed.

He is also survived by his sisters-in-law, Phyllis Plattner and her husband, Walter, of St. Albans and Josephine Smith of St. Albans, an aunt, Madelyn Beauvais of Hillsborough, NC, several nieces, nephews and cousins. In addition to his parents and his daughter, Cynthia, Hubert was also pre-deceased by a grandson, Adam Kyle Elwood in 1978; 2 sons-in-law, John Cook in 1994 and Tim Moss in 2003; his brother, Richard Smith in 2002 and his brother-in-law, Osburn Glidden and his wife, Pearl.

Visiting hours will be Thursday, August 8, 2013, from 7:00 - 9:00 PM in the Heald Funeral Home, 87 South Main Street, St. Albans. A Funeral Service will be held Friday, August 9, 2013, at 11:00 AM in St. Paul United Methodist Church on Church Street with Rev. Dr. Marguerite Gage officiating. Interment will follow in the family lot in the St. Albans Bay Cemetery with full Military Honors.
