Samuel Clark Shepardson 89, of Storrs, passed away on Saturday August 31, 2013 after suffering complications from an auto accident that occurred earlier in the month. His three daughters were by his side. He was born August 6, 1924, in Fairfax, Vermont the son of the late Herbert Shepardson and the late Clarice (Clark) Shepardson. He was the brother of the late Earl Shepardson, Thelma Loop, Wyman Shepardson and Dennison Shepardson. His two sisters Jeanette Beckley and Jean Tibbitts survive him. His infant daughter, Wendy Jean Shepardson, predeceases him.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Virginia (Thompson) Shepardson and his three daughters, Deborah and Jerome Singer, Carrie and Daniel Novak, Kim and Harry Watson. He was the proud grandfather/great grandfather of Anthony and his wife Aubree Novak and Anthony’s son Charlie, Timothy Novak, and Kaylin Novak, Hannah Watson, Luke Watson and Sam Watson. He had a special place in his heart for Joe Maciolek and his son Joe, Susan Morton and her son, Samuel’s adopted grandson, Eli, and Kathryn Brown her husband Ryan and their son, Samuel’s adopted great grandson, Cole. He also treasured his nieces and nephews.
Samuel was a World War II veteran serving in the 11 Airborne 188th Para-Glider infantry and part of the occupational forces in Japan. He worked at the UCONN Dairy Barn for 37 years and the last 18 years was the farm superintendent. He was a 50 + year member of the Mansfield/Echo Grange serving once as a Master. He was a 50+ year member of the Masonic Lamoille no 6. He became a member of the First Baptist Church of Mansfield in 1957.
Sam was always busy. When people came to visit they would often find him tinkering in the yard or his shed. He loved making creations out of wood, attending to his garden or when his grandchildren were younger giving them rides on his tractor. He did not like to sit still for very long, unless it was to read, watch a UCONN Husky basketball game or the Red Sox.
He was a loving, kind man who loved his Lord. He saw the importance of helping people. He had a mischievous wink and smile and a quiet sense of humor. He was very proud of his family and was never afraid to show it.
At the request of the family a memorial service will be held at a later date at Mansfield Baptist Church with a reception immediately following. In his name donations can be made to First Baptist Church of Mansfield 945 Storrs Road, Storrs CT 06268.
Samuel’s family would like to say thank you to family and friends for their constant support during these past few weeks with a special thank you to Mansfield Center for Nursing and the staff at Hartford Hospital.
