I saw these birds (maybe cranes of some kind) in a meadow on Carroll Hill Rd.
They looked to be a little larger than great blue herons.

Anyone know what they are?

really great photo, Joanne.  I think trkr is right about them being sand hill cranes--way out of their range, however.

Yes, they are Sand Hill Cranes. There has been a resident pair in the vicinity of Fairfield Swamp for a few years now and they are grand to see. These are probably the ones from Fairfield. Although their range is mostly in the Midwest, Vermont does have sightings of these birds. There has been another pair reported in the Bristol area.
