It Was 72 Years Ago Today

PEARL HARBOR ATTACK WAS 72 YEARS AGO - Today marks the 72nd anniver­sary of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor that brought the United States into World War II. More than 2,000 Americans were killed in the attack.

I can't tell you just when I heard about it as my family lived on Fairfield Ridge at the time.  We had no electricity and no radio.  We did live on a farm and learned to become very self-sufficient as sugar, butter, gasoline plus many other things were all rationed.  Mother learned to cook with maple syrup and we made our own butter.  Horses were used for transportation to Fairfield Center and the old 1935 Plymouth was used for the occasional trip to St. Albans.  Just about every family had a member in the service and the postal service was the only means of communication with them which took months sometimes.  There was a shortage of teachers and many teachers in this area went one year to Johnson Normal School, now JSC and went out to teach.  I believe two of those teachers from town here were Ruth Ellsworth & Barb King.  One of my teachers on Fairfield Ridge was Ella Meunier, then Ella Camley.

I have so many remembrances of WWII from a child's point of view and actually was scared to death if I heard an airplane thinking it was the Japanese/Germans bombing us.

Anyhow, that all started 72 years ago today.

I remember Ralph Ellsworth telling me that he had driven his dad to the doctor and was sitting in the car listening to the radio when he heard about it. 

Yes, indeed, the greatest generation, and in the past 18 years I have both known and buried many,  including my father in law.  RIP Greatest generation.
