Date and Time: 4/12/2014 at 1119 hours
Locations: 846 Bakersfield Rd., Fletcher, VT

Victim: Carl Eells, 72 years old from Essex CTR , VT

Summary:
On 4/12/2014 at 1119 hours the Vermont State Police received a 911 call regarding a logging accident at 846 Bakersfield Road in the Town of Fletcher, VT. Cambridge Rescue responded to the scene and pronounced Carl Eells deceased upon arrival.

Investigation revealed that Eells was cutting trees along a driveway. The tree he was cutting had the top of another tree caught in its upper branches and when the tree fell the top dislodged striking Eells across the neck. Eells fell to the ground and was pronounced dead at the scene. Eells was wearing protective gear which included a helmet, gloves and logging chaps.

It was learned that Eells was cutting trees for firewood. The firewood was going to be delivered to a farm family that had recently suffered hardship and Eells organized the volunteer work. Eells and the property owner, Garry Potvin were the only two present at the time of the incident.
