Obituary for Lynford Lumbra


EAST FAIRFIELD – Lynford Lumbra, age 77, passed away Saturday, September 20, 2014 at the Pillsbury Homestead in St. Albans where Lynford had resided for the past 2 years.

He was born in Montgomery, VT on November 3, 1936 the son of the late Hardy & Erma (Touchette) Lumbra.

Lynford was a graduate of Brigham Academy in Bakersfield, class of 1955. He married Johanna Lumnah on September 12, 1956. In 1969 Lynford purchased what would be Lyn’s Market in East Fairfield with his wife Jo and together they operated it until their retirement on August 18, 1999. Lyn & Jo purchased the store from Lyn’s father Hardy, whom had purchased the store in 1949. He enjoyed many facets of operating the store, especially custom beef cutting. In 1996 he was recognized with the Local Storekeeper Award by the Vermont Grocers Association for his outstanding service to the community and excellence in store keeping.

Lynford was a very active member of St. Anthony/St. Georges Catholic Church in East Fairfield serving on the Parish Council, Lawn Party Committee and as a Eucharistic Minister. He and Jo loved traveling on scenic bus tours and the trips they took to Rome, Hawaii & Aruba. He also enjoyed spending time with family and close friends especially at camp on Metcalf Pond. More recently Lynford enjoyed participating in activities, lunch dates and outings with his friends at the Pillsbury Homestead.

His family and friends will remember him for his great sense of humor, constant smile and great attitude.

He is survived by his children and their spouses, Colleen & Arthur Sauve of Milton, Chris & Nancy Lumbra of Essex Jct., Craig & Joan Lumbra of East Fairfield, Carrie & Peter Chlumecky of Hinesburg, and Cory & Tammie Lumbra of Vergennes; his grandchildren, Chad Sauve, Casie Adams and her husband Zack, Cayla Sauve, Kyle Lumbra and his wife Sylvie, Johannah & Lauren Lumbra, Callie & Celsey Lumbra, Nicholas, Lynn & Max Chlumecky, Phillip & Taylor Pidgeon, and Reid & Ross Lumbra; his great grandson, Connor Adams; his sisters, Bertha Lamore of Bakersfield and Lorraine Austin of Newcomb, NY; many nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, Lynford was predeceased by his wife, Johanna (Lumnah) Lumbra on December 4, 2011; his brothers, Arnold “Puffer” Lumbra and his wife Kathleen and Harlan “Cheeman” Lumbra and his wife Katherine; and his brothers-in-law, Lionel Lamore & Reginald Austin.

Lynford’s family wishes to give a special thanks to the staff and caregivers at the Pillsbury Homestead for the high quality and loving care that they gave to Lynford throughout his stay.


Funeral services will be held Wednesday, September 24, 2014 at 11:00 AM at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, 116 Church Road, Fairfield with Rev. William Giroux celebrating the Mass of Christian burial. Following the Mass family and friends are invited to gather at the East Fairfield Fire Station for a luncheon.

Interment will be held on Wednesday at 3:00 PM at St. Isidores Cemetery, 169 Mountain Road, Montgomery Center.

Visiting hours will be held Tuesday from 4-7 PM at the Spears Funeral Home, 96 Dickinson Ave., Enosburg Falls.
