Obituary: Marion Agnes Bates

Dateline:  Georgia / Saint Albans, Vermont

 

Marion Agnes Bates, age 81 years, a lifelong Georgia resident and more recently of Hawks Nest in Saint Albans, died late Wednesday evening October 29, 2014, at home with loving family at her side.

Born at home in Georgia, Vermont on April 15, 1933, she was the daughter of the late William and Adeline (Parah) Sartwell. She attended schools in Saint Albans and on July 29, 1951, was married to Eugene Albert Bates who survives her.

For 21 years Marion worked in sales and bookkeeping at the former William Doolin Department Store in Saint Albans City. She was an active member of the Georgia Plaines Baptist Church and the Georgia Volunteer Fire Department Auxiliary. She enjoyed all crafts including sewing, knitting and embroidery and will be best remembered for baking and designing beautiful wedding cakes.

In addition to her husband Eugene of 63 years, Marion leaves a daughter, Bonnie Combs and husband Wesley of Westford; two sons, Robert Bates of Fairfax and Mark Bates and his wife Cheryl of Fairfield; a sister-in-law, Betty Sartwell of Highgate; a brother-in-law, Stanley Longway of Saint Albans; 6 grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren as well as several nieces and nephews.

Besides her parents Marion was predeceased by a sister, Linda Longway in 2004 and a brother, Stewart Sartwell in 1969.

A Funeral Service will be held Monday November 3, 2014, at 11 a.m. from The Georgia Plaines Baptist Church, 1493 Stone Bridge Road, Georgia.. The Reverend Charles Kuthe will officiate. Interment will follow at the Bates family lot in the Georgia Plaines Cemetery.

Friends may call at The Kidder Memorial Home, 89 Grand Avenue, Swanton on Sunday from 4 to 8 p.m.     

Gifts in Marion's memory may be made to the Georgia Plaines Baptist Church or to the Georgia Volunteer Fire Department and First Response, both in care of The Reverend Charles Kuthe, 2573 Plaines Road, Milton 05468
