august poem

[Rev. Elizabeth]

you
who only see the world
as chromosomes and molecules
as DNA and mutation.
who looking  see   eons of evolution, natural selection
and the slow progress of the biochemical world moving
toward life and being

you,
who cannot imagine the hand of the creative divine
anywhere in the vastness of space and time,
in  the fine workings
of a hand, a brain, a whale’s song.

have you even stopped to see
the yellow goldfinch
blacked winged
against the purple thistle
