Barbara (Stewart) Popple, 73, a longtime resident of Fairfax passed away at her home on Tuesday, January 4, 2005. She was born in Burlington on March 15, 1931, daughter of the late Robert and Georgiana (Swan) Stewart. Barbara graduated from Bellows Free Academy, Fairfax, class of 1948. After several years of single handedly raising her three children, Barbara met and married her soul mate and best friend, Howard Popple, Jr. on December 26, 1960. Howard predeceased Barbara in 2002. Mrs. Popple traveled the world with her family and Howard as he served the United States as a member of the US Air Force. The family settled back in Fairfax after Howard’s retirement from the military and that is where Barbara remained until her passing. Barbara was a professional in the banking community initially as an employee of the Franklin Lamoille Bank in Milton. Her career took her to her “favorite place”, Peoples Trust Co. of St. Albans. She served PTCO for the remainder of her career until her retirement as the vice president and manager of the Georgia branch in 1993. As the foundation and support for her family, Barbara was the family cook and entertainer, organizing family gatherings at the lake on Georgia Shore and at her home as recent as January 1, 2005. She enjoyed reading and debating military action and politics with anyone who was willing to engage. She loved to travel and had a particular fondness for “cruising” the seas. Barbara is survived by, Her three children, Sheri Rainville and husband Mark of Fairfax, Scott Popple and wife Betty of St. Albans, Herb S. Popple and wife Vicki of Valrico, FL. Barbara is also survived by Her three brothers, Robert Stewart and wife Joyce of Fairfax, Douglas Stewart and wife Peggy of Fairfax, Richard Stewart and wife Susan of Arlington, And her brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Jim & Joyce Irish of Florida. Affectionately known as “Gram Barb” or “Barbie”, she is also survived by her grandchildren, Lauri and husband Dale, Cory, Nathan, Emily and husband Vince, Jonathan, Joshua, Samantha, Wade, Matthew, Adam and Brenon, and great grandson, Nikolas, An aunt, several cousins and many nieces and nephews. Most importantly, Barbara is survived by her companion and faithful cat, “Whiskers” and many special friends at the former winter home that she and Howard shared in Spring Hill, Florida. Visiting hours will be held on Friday, January 7, 2005 from 2 to 4 pm and 7 to 9 pm in A.W. Rich Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 11 am on Saturday, January 8, 2005 in The United Church of Fairfax with the Reverend Elizabeth Griffin officiating. Interment will follow in the family lot in Fairfax Plains Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Barbara’s memory to the Fairfax Rescue Squad, Inc.
