UPDATE - GEORGIA SHOOTING INCIDENT

January 2, 2017 – Investigation continues into the shooting incident that occurred this afternoon on Georgia Mountain Road in Georgia(*please see below), VT.  This investigation is being treated as a homicide and is being led by the Vermont State Police Major Crime Unit along with detectives from the Bureau of Criminal Investigations.  The Crime Scene Search Team has been activated to process the scene and gather evidence.

Preliminary investigation has revealed that two adult males were traveling in a green Kenworth truck with a lowboy flatbed trailer attached.  This truck was stopped in the roadway facing west on Georgia Mountain Road near the entrance to a driveway located at 732 Georgia Mountain Road when the incident occurred.  Information received by investigators indicates an occupant of this residence, later identified as Ethan Gratton (age 26), had a confrontation with the two occupants of the truck.  This confrontation led to Gratton shooting both occupants of the truck in the roadway.  The circumstances surrounding this confrontation is still under investigation.

One of the shooting victims was identified as Mark Brito (age 27) of Fairfax, VT.  Brito was transported to Northwest Regional Medical Center in St. Albans and was subsequently transported to the University of Vermont Medical Center in Burlington where he is being treated for life threatening injuries.

The second shooting victim was found deceased in the roadway of an apparent gunshot wound.  The deceased has been preliminarily identified as David Hill (age 57) of Fairfax, VT.  The deceased will be transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner’s office for autopsy to confirm identity and determine cause and manner of death.  Next of kin has been notified.

Ethan Gratton was taken into custody by Vermont State Police at the scene and transported to the St. Albans barracks.

This investigation is in its early stages and crime scene processing will remain active overnight.  Major Crime Unit investigators are working closely with the Franklin County State’s Attorney’s Office for determination of criminal charges.  Additional information will be released when it becomes available.

* Please be aware the town location of this incident was originally thought to be Fairfax.  That information is now updated to Georgia, VT.
