Hi All,

When is Columbus Day??  Well, back when I went to school it was October 12th, but I suspect if you ask a youngster today who is in school, he or she will probably say it is the second Monday in October.

Now, I believe we didn't go to school on Columbus Day.  Just checked the BFA Calendar and from what I can see, they do have school on that day (2nd Monday in October).  Federal, State & Town Offices are closed.

What a change in life styles over the years.  I remember when we first moved to Fairfax when the local grocery stores were closed on Sunday Afternoons.  I don't think you could even buy a loaf of bread here on Sunday afternoon and until Boutin's opened, don't even remember a place where you could buy gasoline.  Later on Decker's opened and that made two places you could get gas and they also carried a few groceries that you could buy.

I believe I mentioned a while back in either a newsletter or on the forum something about making Birch Bark Canoes for Columbus Day.  Well, this Internet is certainly great, so if you want to reminisce just a bit and make a birch bark canoe, click on the following link, but instead of using construction paper, check around for some white birch bark, but do stay off your neighbor's property:

In regards to drug stores in St. Albans, if I remember right, one of the drug stores was open on Sunday, but the rest were closed.[/b]
