Moose Killed In Burlington Brings Franklin County Comments

I guess I am not surprised that people are shocked. But, then again it is Vermont.  A moose in a highly congested area like Burlington is extremely dangerous.  For one bulls are unpredictible, are easily agitated and at anytime could charge.  So lets say later that day "Mrs. Jones" was walking 3 blocks away from that area with little Susie in a carriage.  What would have been said if the moose charged and injured them or worse, because Fish and Wildlife decided to 'wait it out'?  Or if they did tranquilize it and it ran towards Riverside Avenue or Pearl St. both of which are busy roads at any time during the day.  A moose car collision is not a pretty sight no matter what type of vehicle you are operating. I have seen many in my emergency career and someone ALWAYS ends up injured. 
UVM is right across Pearl St., as is the hospital entrance. The possibilties are endless that someone could have been injured if this animal did decide to run.  The only alternative would have been shut down the whole city and see what the moose would decide to do....

So lets stop the armchair "animal controlling".  The Fish and Wildlife EXPERTS did what was right at the time...

We had a man stomped to his death a few years back at the University of Alaska, Anchorage.
All he had done was walk out a corner door and got in between a calf and it's mother, unknowingly.
That was our last death I can remember from stomping.

There are a few run ins with moose and people every year.

Sadly 99.9% of the moose put down in Anchorage are caused by people harassing them and getting them agitated to the point where they do cause a threat to life.
