Stearns Boyden Allen Sr.
He was a 1936 graduate of Cambridge High School and worked on the family farm for several years before becoming herdsman at the UVM farm. He later managed farms in Colchester and Shelburne for over 20 years. After 2 years working for Greenmont Lumber Company in Underhill, he went on to work for the State of Vermont at the Ethan Allen Firing Range from 1979 to his retirement in 1996. While at the Range he made many friends and thoroughly enjoyed operating heavy equipment. In addition to being a longtime farmer, Stearns was an avid maple sugar maker who took quiet pride in producing quality maple syrup. A woodsman throughout his life, he loved to trout fish along the many small brooks and streams that he knew so well. He willingly shared his knowledge of the outdoors.
He was a long time member of the Binghamville United Methodist Church, serving as Treasurer for the Trustees. In addition to being a Mason and member of the Cambridge-Jeffersonville Lions Club, Stearns was a past president of the Smugglers Notch Fish and Game Club, where he taught Hunter Safety courses.
He married the former Betty Lou Wright at the United Methodist Church in Fairfax on June 8, 1947. They became active participants in Western-style square dancing which they came to love and eventually teach to others. They celebrated 60 years of marriage this past June.
He is survived by his loving wife Betty Lou (Wright) Allen of Westford, his son Stearns Allen Jr. and wife Cyndy of Cambridge, a daughter Patricia Garcia and husband Jose of San Cristobal L C, Chiapas, Mexico, a sister Beulah Richardson and husband Rudolph of McCormick, South Carolina, his brother-in-law Barney Wright and wife Laura of Troy, NY, two sisters-in-law; Beatrice “Teen” Sheltra of Milton and Nora Allen of South Burlington.
Six Grandchildren; Seven Great Grandchildren; Several nieces and nephews and cousins.
He was predeceased by a son Douglas Wright Allen, a sister Margaret Harlow, a brother Frederick Allen and a great granddaughter Maria Joy Smith.
Visiting hours will be held on Sunday November 4, 2007 from 2:00 – 4:00 and 7:00 – 9:00 p.m. at the A. W. Rich Funeral Home – Fairfax Chapel. A funeral service will be held on Monday November 5, 2007 at 11:00 a.m. at Binghamville United Methodist Church in Fletcher with the Pastor Michael Doran officiating. Burial will follow in the family lot in Binghamville Cemetery – Fletcher. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Stearns’ memory to the Binghamville United Methodist Church c/o Charles Tinker at 629 Fairfax Road, Cambridge, VT 05444.
