One certainly would not be expecting that a bicycle might be driving up the highway on Route 7 this time of year - At 6 p.m. especially it is dark - I strongly suspect that the bicyclist was hit because the operator of the motor vehicle did not see him - I'm not sure that bicycles should be allowed on highways with no bicycle path at night without some very noticeable blinking caution lights - Just my opinion:

MILTON -- A 24-year-old man from Winooski was seriously injured Wednesday when his bicycle was struck by a car on U.S. 7, just south of the Milton Diner, said Milton Police.

Timothy Hebert was taken to Fletcher Allen Health Care with apparent head injuries. He was listed in critical condition this morning, said hospital officials.

A preliminary investigation has revealed that Hebert, who was traveling north on U.S. 7, was struck by a 1999 Subaru Legacy station wagon driven by Robert Bashaw, 55, of Milton. Police said Bashaw had also been driving north on U.S. 7 when he hit Hebert at about 6 p.m..

The accident remains under investigation.
