Hi All,

Last night about 8:30 Maryann told me her new 3-wheel walker wouldn't close up - Took a look at it and something was definitely binding on it, but fortunately I didn't have the right tools to fix it.  If I had, I probably would have screwed it up in fine shape.

Took a run down to J & L Hardware this morning and caught Jeff outside and asked him if it would be OK if I got Brian Stafford to do a little maintenance work for me and told him I fully expected to pay for it.  He told me that was fine.  Now probably anybody else in the store could have helped me out, but when it comes to stuff like that, I usually ask Brian to do it and when it comes to Fire Department stuff like smoke detectors and extinguishers, I look for Kyle Magnuson.  I guess it is something as we get older, we develop a confidence level in certain people and unfortunately for them, when we need something in that line, they are our target.

In no time flat, Brian determined where the problem was (Not where I thought it was) and fixed it within minutes.  I took my wallet out and he said he would take the money out front.  Even though I tried to give him $5, he insisted it was only .53 cents.  I told him I wanted to give him more, but he insisted that, "We are J & L Hardware and that is what we do."

What a great feeling to live in this small town with service like that.  Also, being a small town, the other two employees, who both know me, accepted my little idiosyncrasy and let me wait to be waited on by Brian.

I go to J&L often.  Especially with rebuilding the house and I can say that everyone of them  is excellent in helping me out.  Since I am not a carpenter, painter, or finish work specialist; I usually walked in with questions of what I was about to do and then I would follow them around the store as they help me pick the right equipment for the task!

I can honestly say that I went to the bigger Hardware stores in Williston and St. Albans instead of getting what I was told to pick up by my contractors, it would take two or more trips on certain occasions just for them to get it right.  I started carrying lists when I had to go to them or pieces of what I was supposed to pick up more of so I would save myself another trip!

"Thanks J&L"  you are the best!

"Life is too short, so love the one you got!"

I stopped at J &L a week or so ago, needing some help with taking some brackets off of a mirror. Being new to the area, I don't know which person helped me, but he took the mirror in the back room, and about 10 minutes later, he brought the mirror out - less the brackets. I then asked for his advice in helping me to hang the mirror. After measuring the mirror, he suggested putting it back out to in my car, for safe keeping. He then took me over to where the mirror hangers are, measured them to make sure they would fit, and brought them up to the counter. He did not charge me for the labor, just for the hardware that I bought.

I mentioned to my wife when I got home how fortunate we are to have a local hardware store of this caliber. I doubt that I would have received the same treatment at one of the big box stores.

I have been a resident in Fairfax for about 7 years now and when I moved here I did not know anyone. I'm so happy that my wife and I decided to do so. We got to know a few people here in Fairfax over a short period of time and one of those families is Jeff and Paula Meunier . One Sunday night I was doing a plumbing project and a part broke. J&L was closed and didn't know what to do. I call Jeff at home and told I'm what had happen 10 minutes later I meet up with Jeff at the Store and he got what I needed and sent me on my way. There is no way you would ever get that service from outside of Fairfax and that is not the only time any of the people at J&L have helped me out. There are plenty of stories to tell.

Hats off to J&L.
