Hard to believe somebody would waste their time counterfeiting $1 bills, especially at the value of a dollar, but anyhow here it is:

Vermont State Police are warning businesses in the St. Albans area to watch out for the possible circulation of counterfeit money.

Police today said they are investigation a case in which counterfeit U.S. one dollar bills were passed at a restaurant in the St. Albans area.

The investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information about the case should contact Trooper MacCallum at the state police barracks in St. Albans at 524-5993.

They're probably using $1 bills because they think people are less apt to look at that bill.

Also, there is $20 counterfeit bills being passed.  As cashier, I received one from one of the Vt. ports last month.  The old $20s seem to be ok; this was the new $20 bills being counterfeited.  The best way to look for a counterfeit bill (assuming you don't carry one of those markers around with you) is to hold the bill up to the light and look for a watermark on the bill.  The watermark has yet to be able to be reproduced.
