Warnings were being issued last night on the 6 p.m. newscasts - And people were heeding those warnings. I went down to the village around 6:45 and a number of people had their plants and gardens covered with cloths for the night. Just goes to show you that up in this neck of the woods, its best to forget Memorial Day as the planting day for delicate plants and stick with May 30th.
I thought I had found a real timesaver one year and decided to use small white plastic garbage bags, only to find they apparently have no insulation value whatsoever when it comes to protecting plants, at least for me. I lost every one of my tomato plants that year. Newspapers, paper bags, or cloth, I found what what I needed to go with up here in my frost pocket. I used to make paper caps out of newspapers and reuse them over and over until about the end of June some years.
We haven't bought our hanging plants yet, but the one my daughter gave Maryann for Mother's Day was brought in the garage last night. Back when I used to raise strawberries, I remember coming home from working second shift around 11:30 p.m. and covering them and the garden stuff by the headlights of the car.
Just in case you haven't guessed by now, my particular spot is not the greatest to raise delicate plants and start them very early. Either the frost will get me in the spring, or by September 9th.
I'll just trot down to Marvin & Cathy's for my vegetables - By the way, Maryann is already asking when will the peas be ready. I'm sure it will be a while, but when you hear they are ready, do let me know, as those are Maryann's favorite fresh vegetable.
