Fairfax, Vt., July 16, 2008 -- Chris Santee, editor of The Fairfax News, announced his candidacy today for State Representative for the Legislative District of Franklin-1, covering Fairfax and Georgia.

“Vermont is the greatest place in the world, bar none. But, in order to keep it that way, we need to send legislators to Montpelier who will focus on issues and solve problems in our own back yards. Because,” said Santee, “it doesn’t matter if Vermont is the greatest place in the world if you can’t afford to live here.”

“This past legislative session, we needed the legislature to make progress on property tax reform, an economic plan to deal with rising fuel costs, food costs, housing costs, and laws that keep our children and our communities safe from the worst kind of predators. What we got instead was a lot of wasted time and taxpayer dollars on decriminalizing marijuana, eliminating the electoral college for presidential elections, banning bogus rock stars, and, on the day we found out our state revenues were so far below expectations that we would have to cut $25 million worth of government services, a debate and non-binding resolution on the conflict between China and Tibet.”

“These priorities must change. I am ready to go to Montpelier, reach across the aisle, and work with everybody to make sure Vermonters are fiscally secure and physically safe.”

“Our first objective should be to take swift and effective action in regard to the heating fuel crisis we will be facing this winter. We need to take action and get Vermont’s economy booming again. We need to make Vermont the last place in the world a sexual predator would ever want to be. The one thing we do not need to do is raise taxes in any way shape or form, and I pledge to fight any tax increase on Vermonters proposed by anyone."
