Hi All,

Memorial Day is next Monday and shown below are Theresa Gross, Sally Sweet and Elaine Kirkpatrick placing flags at the tombstones of our veterans interred in Sandersons Corners Cemetery on the Fletcher Road.

Interestingly enough, the girls are standing in front of a tombstone that brought back a memory to me regarding the history of St. Luke's Church.

"On November 6, 1872, the St. Albans Messenger also stated that Tuffield Provo had a leg broken in consequence from a fall from a staging upon the Catholic Church, on which he was at work."

Like many tombstones found in our cemeteries, the name on the tombstone is spelled differently than the actual town record information.

There are many Catholics interred in the Sanderson's Corners Cemetery as the St. Luke's Cemetery was not used until it's first burial in 1942.

Sanderson's Corners Cemetery is the largest of 13 cemeteries located in Fairfax with over 2000 individuals interred there.

Happened to be going by the cemetery when the girls were working, but usually different local residents take care of distributing the flags each year at the different cemeteries.  Will be glad to add that information, if someone wants to give it to me or any registered member of the forum can post it.

Henry Raymond
