Essex Police said 73-year-old John Reiss, a 30 year St. Michael's College Professor, was in his Essex home when he was hit by a stray bullet.

Police said the fatal round was fired from a rifle that was being used during target practice in a neighbor's yard on Old Stage Road.

Police said several people were practicing at the time with multiple weapons.

The people involved are cooperating with police.
